The institution of artists-in-residence exists as a model to invite artists, academics, and the like to create new forms of artistic expression and to produce distinct bodies of work. Through social interaction or seclusion, residencies achieve art through aesthetic experience.
Chateau d’Orquevaux aims to provide an inspiring shelter to artists and creative professionals looking for a mental and physical space to develop their projects.
Chateau d’Orquevaux hosts artists of all disciplines for two to four week residencies and the open call starts in July for artists of all disciplines. English is spoken.
Our mission is to create an international environment where all artists are welcome. A safe place to explore, contemplate and share ideas. We aim to empower the creative spirit in its many forms, which in the process, has created a vibrant artistic community.
Chateau d'Orquevaux Artist Residency emphasizes the human experience and the creative process. The residency creates an environment for the artist in their quest for personal growth and artistic expression--while reinforcing that the end product is not necessarily the principal focus.
We believe life is a creative journey and consider every moment a part of the process.
New experiences stimulate creativity and revitalize the creative mind. For this reason our residency is self-motivated. The artist must immerse themselves in the French country lifestyle.
The things you thought you knew back home will begin to look different.
This magnificent estate in the French countryside of Champagne-Ardenne is a unique environment, offering artists a place with limited distraction, plenty of food and an abundance of natural inspiration.
Why Chateau d’Orquevaux Artist Residency?
Over the years, Chateau d’Orquevaux has cultivated a global network of artists. We continue to bring talented international and local creative partners to Florence and work with influential businesses to assist our residents during their time.
We provide a living experience and cultural lexicon that facilitates space and inspiration for works of art. We offer accommodation, studio space, and chances to meet and international artist community.
Housed on top of a hill and in several different guest houses in Orquevaux, our rooms and working spaces are flooded with natural light. Both options for seclusion or socializing are available, whether focused in the studio or outside in our shared spaces. There is an exchange of ideas and energy in every space.
Three hours away from Paris, our buildings are a reflection of French country spirit itself. France that carries the essence of Art with every forward step into a new creative scene.
Chateau d’Orquevaux Artists in Residence program is an independent project and sustains itself by renting out its studios and rooms to its selected artists.
We also welcome duo artists.
We have 14 bedrooms and 4 kitchens in the chateau main building, the Gate House, Hill House, and Maison de petite jardin; a Salon that also acts as a co-working space and studios that are all available for residents to use. They are assigned based on availability, but if you have a specific preference, you can make a request and we’ll do our best to save your favorite spot for you.
Your studio working space can be chosen according to your needs. Sometimes the space in your studio is enough, and sometimes we will find a space that reflects your project. We’ll work it out together!
An Open Studio will be set up at the end of the residency program, and available for those who wish to participate.
We rarely exhibit pieces that were produced outside of our residency program; however if you feel that your already existing pieces would be a good fit, feel free to present your ideas to us. This can be integrated with what you produce during your residency, and curated for the final exhibition.
We see exhibitions at Chateau d'Orquevaux as conversations with the space, with the palace, and with the countryside of France as a whole.
The selection process and acceptance is run by our Advisory board.

Who does Chateau d'Orquevaux cater to?
We cater to anyone in the creative field, including visual artists and writers.
How does application round work?
We make the selection of applicants together with a panel of advisors who are professional artists, understanding the Chateau d'Orquevaux' ethics and aesthetics.
Based on this we want to understand who you are and what you are planning to work on during your stay with us. It’s therefore important for you to share your portfolio, Instagram account, website, Tumblr, Dribble or any other platform of preference.
Is Chateau d'Orquevaux a public institution?
Chateau d'Orquevaux aims to act as a retreat, as a place where creatives can rediscover the core of their profession. (??)
We are a private and independent artist residency and do not receive external funding support. All income from the hospitality and venue is reinvested in the artist projects, giving us the opportunity to fund only a selected amount of residencies each year.
Can I get funded for my stay?
Most governments have grants to support artists and programs to pay for artist residencies.
If you want to apply for such grants of your own country, we are happy to assist you with the application by writing an official acceptance letter if necessary.
