Sculpture Open Call

Denis Diderot Sculpture Garden

Chateau Orquevaux

"First of all, move me, surprise me, rend my heart; make me tremble, weep, shudder, outrage me!
Delight my eyes, afterwards, if you can...
Whatever the artform, it is better to be extravagant then cold."

- Denis Diderot - Artist, writer and Philosopher (1713 - 1784)
- Diderot was a frequent guest of Chateau Orquevaux
mostly to visit his daughter, grandson and son-in-law. - (see history)

Considered the "first" important art writer of our time,  Denis Diderot was well suited to the task of observing and recording, but, with art, he took the process of cataloguing one step further and crafted the art of judging in his "Salon writings". Diderot's way of seeing art has influenced all art critiques to this day and led the way in the modernization of art by placing increasing value on individuality, passion and creativity.
For 150 years quite a bit of Denis Diderot's unpublished manuscripts were stored at Chateau Orquevaux.
In 1929 The New York Times published an article that the manuscripts "...will finally see the light of day..."

We need you! Imagine your work here 100 or 200 years from now. This is a country built on art,  history and a "bit" of revolution. The Denis Diderot Sculpture Garden and Park will be free to the public and here long after we are all gone. The garden will showcase monumental work, sculpture studies, smaller castings of large work and miniatures.  At this time we will only be able to accept exterior work on a barter basis. We can cover the cost of materials, tools and some personal expenses depending on the project. Hopefully you can create larger work on premises to control cost and you will have a great place to stay.  As we get press we will do everything we can to promote the artists.  In the event that your project needs a significant budget send your proposal anyway - we will keep it in mind for when it may become a possibility. Please consider this opportunity and send us an email with your thoughts. We look forward to hear from you.
